The Sand Pebbles 2/5

I watched this movie because of the its lead, the customized 4.2 Netflix rating, and because it was on GQ's list of the "The Ten Best Guy Films You've Never Seen".* This is a great idea for a movie and I love Steve McQueen, but almost everything seemed to be pathetically executed. Who cares about the extended length or the ending, when there are so many other horrible aspects that one could focus on. McQueen's hands are tied by a silly script and laughable supporting performances. During a boxing scene Steve's character literally just says "hit'em" about thirty times over a five minutes period. The whole thing is so on the nose and painful to watch it's flabbergasting that Wise and McQueen could have been associated.
